Transitions Mobility Stair Lift Measuring Guide

Measuring your stairway correctly is essential to ensuring that your new stair lift will install easily and function safely and properly. Please enter your contact information and follow the instructions below carefully so that we can get back with you with the most accurate quote possible.

Step 1: Determine the mount side

Mount Side: Looking up from the bottom of the staircase determine which side the stair lift will be mounted.*

*Note: The stair lift mounts directly to the stairs but take note of any handrails, window sills, doorways or other non-removable obstructions. Also, take into consideration the stair lift rail will go approximately 8" past the top step and 12" past the bottom step.

Step 2: Determine the length of the track

Use a heavy duty metal tape measure & take all measurements twice.

Measurement A - Top to Bottom Landing: Stand at the top of your stairs and extend the tape measure down the staircase. The tape measure should slightly rest on each stair tip (nose) and touch the landing at the bottom of the stairs. Record the measurement from the tip (nose) of the top landing to the floor at the bottom landing.

Measurement B - Top to First Step at Bottom: Measure from the tip (nose) of the top landing to the tip (nose) of the first step at the bottom of the stairs.*

Measurement A - Top to Bottom:	Feet Inches
Measurement B - Top to First Step:	Feet Inches

Step 3: Measure the stair tread and rise

Measurement C - Stair tread depth: Measure the depth of a stair from the tip (nose) to the back. The tread is the "stepping" part of the stair. *

*Note: If your stairs include a "lip" or overhang at the front of each step, measure to the top of the "lip" to the bottom of one step. Measure the tread by measuring from the front edge of the step (or "lip" if required) to the back of the step.

Measurement D - Stair rise height & total number of risers.: Measure the rise of a single step by measuring from the tip (nose) straight down to the next tread.

Count the total number of risers.

Measurement D - Stair Rise Length:	Inches

Step 4: Measure distance at top and bottom to obstructions.

Measurement E - Distance to top obstruction.: Measure the distance from the front tip (nose) of the top step to any obstruction on the top landing.*

Measurement F - Distance to bottom obstruction.: Measure the distance from the bottom edge of the last riser to any obstruction on the bottom landing.*

*Note: Common obstructions include: doors, openings to hallways, fixed railings and corners.
